Village of Southwood
Southwood lies three miles south of Hexwater, and is a small farming hamlet located in the narrow part of the valley along the east bank o the Ambarin River and the Great Escarpment. The lands south of Southwood open and quickly become a mix of farms and woodlots, well-watered and bringing their produce south into Mornhaven As a result, the village is something of an “in-between place”, where it lies a little beyond the direct influence of that southern city, but dominated by the trade along the Forest Walk enough that they remain apart from the direct influence of the Timberwright’s Guild. For generations, the village suffered at the hands of river pirates, criminal elements from the Echo Wood and the dominating control of Hexwater. Then thirty years ago, in TR 1020, a knight named Varden rode through the area with his followers and spent a month ruthlessly hunting every pirate, bandit and thief in the area that plagued the village.
The grateful people of Southwood begged him and his soldiers to stay, or so his people claim, and he quickly made himself the local knight-protector of the village and its lands. He built a small tower fort and proceeded to take feudal obligations from all the local farms. Known as Fort Inevitable, his tower fort is a simple fieldstone affair, and his soldiers regularly sally forth from it to gather taxes and put down any threat to the locals. He is rumored to have ties to the Agrikan church, and is fond of the title “The Hellknight”, but does not overly impress any harsh discipline on the people. He formally swore an oath of allegiance to the lord of Hexwater five years ago in TR 1044, and is wholly his man, meaning he has free reign within his own lands, so long as the taxes are paid on time.
